Samenvatting

Sikkens Prize 2020

Tekst

This publication, which I designed at the end of 2019 on the occasion of the 2020 Sikkens Prize for planetary scientist Carolyn Porco, could only be awarded during the 2022 edition due to the pandemic.

Carolyn Porco was part of the Cassini space mission as a scientist and team leader. With her colorful images of the universe, Porco makes us aware of the fragility of our earthly existence. In the opinion of the Sikkens Prize board, Carolyn Porco’s pioneering work combines scientific, aesthetic and social objectives.

The publication contains the laudatio and some images of Saturn taken during the Cassini mission (1997-2004). With black paper as a basis, the full color images have been printed using a layer of silver and white ink. As you leaf through the many empty black pages, the images of Saturn seem to mysteriously emerge from the deep, dark background.
