We Made It
This publication was published on the occasion of the Dutch Arti Oeuvreprijs 2023 being awarded to artist Irene Fortuyn, whose work has taken shape in a wide variety of ways over the years. What unites this multifaceted and diverse oeuvre are her many collaborations. Fortuyn’s her work is not just the reflection of one individual’s vision; the artist who signs it. It materialized, through interaction and mutual inspiration. This publication tells the story of twelve people with whom Irene collaborated. Twelve stories, twelve perspectives and experiences.
The publication (24x32cm) is printed on translucent paper stock. Each interview is given two pages, in order of the period of collaboration of the interviewees with Irene Fortuyn. Text and images from the previous and next pages are faintly visible and thus ‘collaborate’ to form a new image. Since elements on opposite side of a page never overlap, legibility remains intact. As you browse, the various interviews fall into place like pieces of a puzzle. To the right of the double page spread, the portrait photo of the next person on the timeline is already faintly visible. This see-through effect creates a visual dialogue.
Shifting page numbers remain faintly visible as a timeline. The title on the cover is build up out of various superimposed handwritings. This design makes tangible how old and new projects in a body of work always influence each other.
